The NNFD Academy Lesson That Changes Everything

When the big red truck rushes past, what do you assume the crew is racing toward? A roaring fire?

The truth might surprise you. In Newport News, the vast majority of calls answered by the NNFD are not fire-related—they are critical Emergency Medical Services (EMS) emergencies. The Citizen Fire Academy doesn't just teach you about hoses and ladders; it reveals how every NNFD uniform is trained to provide life-saving medical care, making them the first and fastest medical response unit in your neighborhood.

For the NNFD, EMS isn't just a side job—it's the primary focus. The Academy provides participants with a deep understanding of what happens when a 911 medical call is dispatched.

Understanding the Dual Role: Firefighter-Paramedic

The first key concept participants learn is that virtually every NNFD engine and truck rolling into a neighborhood carries highly trained medical personnel.

  • The Firefighter/Paramedic: You’ll discover that the NNFD operates on a dual-role model. Most NNFD personnel are certified as Firefighter-Paramedics or Firefighter-EMTs. This means they are trained to fight fires and provide advanced life support, ensuring that when an emergency vehicle arrives, immediate medical care is available.
  • Rapid Response: You learn how NNFD’s strategic station placement ensures they are often the first medical unit on scene. This rapid response is critical for time-sensitive emergencies like cardiac arrests and severe trauma.

Hands-On Life-Saving Skills

The Academy doesn't just lecture; it engages participants with hands-on activities that highlight critical life-saving techniques.

  • CPR and AED Basics: Participants usually receive an introduction to Hands-Only CPR and learn the proper use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). This training empowers citizens to act during a sudden cardiac event, which can triple the chances of survival for a victim.
  • First Aid Introduction: You’ll often cover basic first aid skills, such as controlling serious bleeding (Stop the Bleed concept), recognizing symptoms of a stroke (using the F.A.S.T. acronym), and managing choking emergencies.
  • Scene Management: Instructors show how NNFD crews manage a chaotic emergency scene, prioritizing patient care while ensuring safety for themselves and the public.

A Look Inside the Ambulance and Rescue Truck

The Academy provides a guided tour and explanation of the tools NNFD Medics use every day.

  • Advanced Medical Equipment: Participants get to see—and often touch—the medical equipment carried on NNFD apparatus. This includes everything from cardiac monitors and advanced airway kits to specialized trauma bags.
  • Scenario Training: In some modules, participants may observe or even take part in mock scenarios, such as responding to a simulated cardiac arrest or vehicle accident, illustrating the teamwork and critical decision-making required by NNFD Medics.

By showcasing the department’s intensive medical training and the complexity of their EMS mission, the Citizen Fire Academy gives residents a true appreciation for the skills and professionalism NNFD personnel bring to every emergency, whether it involves fire, trauma, or a medical crisis.
