Supporting More than just fighting fires

The Newport News Fire Department is a comprehensive, all-hazards emergency services organization with a wide array of specialized capabilities far exceeding traditional firefighting.

Advanced Life Support

NNFD manages over 39,000 annual calls, with the majority being EMS-driven. Personnel are dual-trained as firefighters and Advanced Life Support (ALS) medical technicians to provide rapid, high-competence emergency care.

HazMat Response Team

The NNFD has a certified HazMat team to respond to the release of dangerous chemicals and threats from Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD). They serve as a regional asset, supporting neighboring jurisdictions

Bomb Squad (EOD) Unit

The NNFD operates a specialized EOD unit, or Bomb Squad. This team utilizes dedicated resources, including a sophisticated Mobile Command Unit, for safe, stand-off mitigation of explosive threats.

Technical Rescue Team

Specialized personnel for complex structural rescues, high-angle (rope) rescues, auto accidents, and saving individuals from difficult and challenging situations.

Marine & SwiftWater Team

Essential for a waterfront city, these teams addresses waterborne and waterfront emergencies. The NNFD is a formal partner in the Port of Virginia's Maritime Incident Response Team (POV MIRT), ensuring port infrastructure protection

Care Team

The CARe program pairs a Paramedic with a Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP) to address mental health crises. This model resolves crises on-scene, reducing the burden on emergency departments and law enforcement.
